With stricter mileage standards and fuel economy effecting the purchasing decisions of people worldwide, the question still remains-can luxury cars be green? Let’s face it, the mass-market hybrids that have emerged recently are about as exotic as a plastic tote.
The new generation of hybrids certainly have excellent intentions, preserving the environment and lining the pockets of their customers-yet they have further to go in the luxury department. Affluent buyers are less concerned with fuel efficiency, and are hardly going to purchase a plastic box with wheels, perhaps with faux leather interior….just not realistic.
Thankfully, a new breed of luxury hybrids and plug-ins are targeting these affluent buyers, attempting to attain both class and economic efficiency standards. Luxury automakers that were not necessarily on-board in the past are scrambling to join the ranks of those developing electric-bolstered cars. Exotic brands such as Porsche, Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Lexus and Land Rover are all hitting the market with some green-enhancements.
It seems the future of the automotive industry is leaning toward more economical and environmentally sound methods of operation, and that luxury companies are gearing up for that future. It will certainly be interesting to observe what these companies come up with next, in their quest to scale the challenging rift between “green” and “luxurious”. It will also be interesting to see if the environmental wave hits the exotic car rental circuit.
