Recently the CEO of Chrysler/Fiat has expressed interest in expanding the use of the Jeep Grand Cherokee platform, within Chrysler and Fiat.  On the Fiat side, this may include using the Cherokee platform to develop a Maserati SUV and Alfa Romeo SUV.  Lamborghini’s response?  Bring it on.  Does this indicate that there could be Lamborghini SUV rentals in our luxury SUV rental fleet in the future? 

 

Yes, there is chatter in the UK about Volkswagen Group’s Lamborghini brand engineering a high-performance SUV, a successor to the LM002.  The Lamborghini LM002 was an SUV produced between 1986 and 1993, unofficially dubbed the ‘Rambo Lambo’.   Based on the Audi Q5 platform and upcoming Porsche Cajun, the new SUV is to be called the Lamborghini LM00X, and it remains to be seen what clever nicknames it will acquire!

Lamborghini is reportedly expanding its product line from two to five models in the next few years, with intentions to compete in new market segments.

Amid tightening EPA restrictions and a retreat from gas-guzzling SUVs, some may wonder what these luxury brands are thinking investing in this niche.  The answer seems to lie in engineering, where innovations are improving fuel economy without reducing the power buyers crave from an SUV.  I do predict the luxury SUV market will be small but lucrative for a time.

According to reports from the auto blogosphere, a 4.2-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, the same engine that will debut in the Audi next year, will power the Lamborghini LM00X SUV.

This will enable the new Lamborghini SUV to destroy the 0-62 marker in 4 seconds, crazy impressive for an SUV!  This makes me want to race a Lamborghini SUV against a Gallardo.  There may be a second engine option for the LM00X Lambo, in the form of a supercharged 5.0-liter V10 kicking out 500 horses.  The Lamborghini LM00X may hit the luxury SUV market as soon as 2012.
