Porsche 918 Plug-in Hybrid Luxury Car

Auto reports insist that the Porsche 918 Sypder is the fastest hybrid plug-in at the moment…and now we can all find out, as it has survived to see production!  Like most supercars, if there are enough buyers, it will be built, and apparently the 2010 Geneva Auto Show was good to Porsche, as they plan a 2013 production for this luxury plug-in car.  Predictions for the Porsche 918 hybrid racecar have come true! I am sure this will be a hot vehicle in a line up of Los Angeles exotic rental cars.

 

Porsche 918 Plug-in Hybrid

The Porsche 918 Spyder Plug-in may look like the Porsche Careera GT, but it is powered by a hybrid drivetrain.  The Porsche plug-in delivers 500+ horsepower via an electric and gas powered hybrid engine and is all-wheel drive.  Two electric motors provide 218 of those horses.  This luxury hybrid car can hit the 0-60 marker in just 3.1 seconds with top speeds of 200 miles per hour, making it a direct threat to the not so mainstream Veritas RS III luxury hybrid car.

With an MSRP of around $845,000, the Porsche plug-in achieves an impressive 78 miles per gallon under normal driving conditions.  This model will be offerred with a manually removable hardtop that can be placed over the front luggage compartment.

Porsche will produce 918 units of the Spyder hybrid, and they are offering a special edition 911 Turbo S for buyers to drive while they await arrival of their 918 hybrid…though not for free!
