Forget the fear of dropping your transmission while driving…rumors are circulating that the future of supercars like Lamborghini may not have the option of a manual transmission!  Yes, Lamborghini may drop manual transmissions in favor of automatic selections.  Imagine renting a Lamborghini without the option of manually manipulating your supercar…is that the world you want to live in?

According to Maurizio Reggiani, Lamborghini’s R&D director, the future replacement for the Gallardo will only be offered with an automated transmission.  But why?

Unbelievably, only a small fraction of Lamborghini customers opt for a manual transmission in their Gallardo. The new Lamborghini Aventador comes with a fully automated 7-speed single-clutch transmission, an indicator of the future of the brand?  Not everyone is thrilled with the thought of forced training wheels, but with just 1-2% of the supercars rolling out of the Sant’Agata Bolognese factory sporting three pedals, what else is to be done?

Reggiani explains further that a manual transmission acts as a break in the electronic chain of command that connects the engine to the combustion chamber and tire contact patch.  The company cannot guarantee a smooth drive unless the Lambo is interconnected seamlessly, and that is achieved through an automated transmission.  Not every driver is able to shift gears without the occasional glitch, but with an automatic, all systems are interconnected.

I fully grasp the logic and reasoning behind the R&D director’s words, yet when someone drops a quarter of a million dollars and upward for a supercar, I feel that it should offer both transmission capacities.  What are your thoughts?  Comment below!
