Wyclef Jean is making headlines again with regards to Haiti. It is likely a very good thing that Jean was not elected president of Haiti, because there is now an uproar about a Hatian relief fund…more specifically, the apparent squandering of it! Sadly, less than 1/3rd of the $16 million dollar relief fund created by Jean in 2010 to aid the country following the devastating earthquake actually made it to emergency efforts. What interests and angers people is where most of the money actually ended up.

The fund is called ‘Yele Haiti’, and the New York Post placed a spotlight on the sketchy nature of the spending. According to an in-depth report by the Post, Yele doled out millions in questionable contracts, including $1 million to a seemingly nonexistent Florida firm. A sum of $353,983 was given to a construction company run by Jean’s brother-in-law, and the list goes on.

Jean has had issues with charities he created in the past, including neglecting to outline to the IRS exact spending records. Immediately following the January 12, 2010, quake in his native country, Jean took to Twitter asking for $5 donations to start a relief fund, which quickly rolled in. After the charitable donations built up, Jean used $250,000 of it to fund a Haitian TV station controlled by himself and another man…presumably to aid his election efforts more than his countrymen in distress. 

 

According to Jean,
"Have we made mistakes before? Yes. Did I ever use Yele money for personal benefits? Absolutely not. Yele’s books are open and transparent."
