$3.5 Million Bugatti Type 54 Racecar Hits Auction Block

Another awesome slice of exotic auto history is hitting the auction block—a Bugatti Type 54 racecar! The $3.5 million dollar Bugatti factory racer was driven by Achille Varzi at Monza in 1931. The medium rare wonder features a racing blue coat and a body shape befitting its era—the early 1900s. This is a true piece of the rich luxury racing past and offers a clue about the origins of that telltale Bugatti bubble styling!

Back in its prime!

The racecar will be offered by Bonham’s auction house during the weeklong Retromobile collector car festivities in Paris. It is one of the then-new Type 54 cars boasting a 4.9-liter engine, supercharged, and twin overhead cams pushing out 300 horses with a top speed of 150 miles per hour. That type of speed and power was quite impressive back then, similar to the Bugatti Veyron Super Sports of today.

Can you imagine racing in a car like this? The windshield is cosmetic at best, and there is no roof to protect the driver in the event of a crash!

Bonham’s has mentioned that the rare Bugatti racecar could fetch $3.2 million, and up to $4.4 million dollars. The relic did a bit of showing off at the Goodwood Revival festival, which was hosted September 13th-15th in Chichester, England.
