Today’s automobile design students are churning out renderings for what could be the Maserati GranTurismo of 2020. This example is about a year old, but hopefully components of it survive to production. It certainly takes on a refreshing reshape from the traditional Maserati mold, while still nurturing brand identity.
The student artists responsible for this exciting 2020 Maserati GranTurismo concept have studied under the supervision of Fiat at Politecnico di Milano to obtain a Transportation and Automobile design master.
The design proportions look fantastic on paper. The predominant aspects are the covered rear wheels. This art student trend has been around for a while. While it seems futuristic and perhaps a bit Marvel comic for projects and portfolios, it simply lacks appeal on the actual street. Should this reach a showroom floor, you can feel confident it would do so on a much more appropriate set of shoes.
The body is given more shape, appearing to swell up at its shoulders and become more aggressive. To accommodate this added arch, the cabin slides back a bit. Overall it manages to maintain a fluid flow for the body even with touch of added bulk.
The trademark Maserati grille is widened and lowered a touch, and finished off with elongated LED lighting. Now let’s take in the rear view. The idea of a smooth and never-ending surface that began with the wheels continues here. The back is characterized by a single surface that curves around to the undercarriage. Essentially it looks like it was neatly folded up from the bottom, with the bumper, diffuser and tail lamps consisting of a solid piece. I hate it, but I love the side and front views.
