Revealed: Destino Red Concept by VL Automotive

The Detroit Auto Show has certainly been interesting this year. Case in point: The Destino Red Concept by VL Automotive. This unexpected jewel may look familiar to you, as it should, if you have seen the Fisker Karma.

Destino Red ConceptThat seductive vision in red is not another Fisker Karma, but the Destino Red concept. While it is built from a Karma shell, there are new styling cues added and a mystery powertrain. Will it survive to see the glory of production?

VL Automotive is a company backed by Bob Lutz with the intention of revving up interest in Karmas. Lutz’s good karma has led to a potential new shot at stardom and survival for the brand. While the Destino Red does in fact ride on a Karma chassis, there are design cues and that signature red to distinguish it as a VL product. VL Automotive describes the Destino Red as a two-door hard top convertible touring coupe. To summarize, it is every bit the stunner the Fisker Karma is, transformed into a four-seater drop top…not bad.

As for what will lurk beneath that shapely hood, Destino buyers currently have the following options: a 6.2-liter LT1 V8 from the new Corvette Stingray or the supercharged 6.2-liter LS9 V8 from the Corvette ZR1. The same options will likely apply to the Destino Red sibling.

As for production, that is where the brakes get touchy. Fisker Automotive is undergoing a restructure, and VL Automotive is currently pushing hard to secure all parts needed for the Red. VL Automotive has communicated that there has been interest in the Destino Red and the Destino sedan from current Fisker owners and also new customers.
