A very unique race car will be hitting the ADAC Zurich 24 Hours of Nurburgring race this year: a hydrogen fueled Aston Martin Rapide S! The brand has announced that the car will be making not only a debut, but also entry into the popular endurance race this year.
Hydrogen fueled Aston Martin Rapide S to race in 24 Hours of Nurburgring
Aston is aiming to be the first to perform a lap with zero carbon dioxide emissions in mainstream racing with this hydrogen fueled Rapide S. The debut of the hydrogen version coincides with the release of a revised Aston Martin Rapide S luxury road car, which will be hitting showrooms within weeks.
The road version of the Rapide S has been improved in the power arena, with a top speed of 190 miles per hour and the ability to hit 60 miles per hour in 4.7 blistering seconds. The hydrogen version boasts a specialized and twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V12 engine capable of running on pure gaseous hydrogen, pure gas, or a combination of both.
The racing Aston Martin Rapide S has a hydrogen fuel rail, tanks and an entirely separate management system. The tanks are derived from durable carbon fiber and the four vessels can store 7.7 pounds of hydrogen at 5,076 pounds per inch of pressure. Two tanks are next to the driver’s seat and the others are in the trunk.
There will be over 150 exotic racers starting the grueling 24 Hour endurance race. The race takes place on a 15.5-mile circuit that blends the old Formula One (Nordschleife) with the modern Grand Prix track. It will be interesting to see how Aston’s hydrogen fueled fare fares in the race.
