The 2013 Geneva Motor Show is slated for March 7th-17th and Mercedes-Benz appears to be ready! The brand will be launching their new Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG, and is it ever a stunner! This debut comes a year after the new Mercedes A-class emerged, and we have great expectations for the A45 AMG! Could it join our fleet of Mercedes-Benz rentals one day? That remains to be decided.

The price is yet to be revealed, but expect it to be competitive with both Audi and BMW.

The new AMG will compete head-to-head with the BMW M135i and Audi RS3 Sportsback. It seems Europe is enduring a serious hot-hatch explosion…which is a bit interesting. Think back to the Ferrari FF invasion in Maranello. Since that time, many more luxury hatchbacks are popping out on their family-friendly wheels.

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz AMG fleet

Engineers from Mercedes claim that the A45 AMG hits the 0-62 in 5.1 seconds with a top speed limited to 155 miles per hour. It is a luxury family car, but certainly no track car. There may be a performance package available that can take the speed up to 168…but you are never going to look awesome in front of your friends racing a hatch, so why bother. All good–but what is under the hood? Glad you asked:
This is the AMG badge’s first hatch, so they needed it to be a bit badass to save face. In that interest, AMG engine boss Fritz Eichler developed a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder direct injection petrol engine. The shocker is that they claim 40 mpgs for this model.

Power reaches all four wheels via a 7-speed dual clutch gearbox. The special gearbox was developed in-house at the Stuttgart headquarters. The latest prototype photos depict 18-inch multi-spoke wheels and twin trapezoidal chrome tail pipes. It will be fantastic to see the final product at the show this March! Stay tuned.
