Mercedes-Benz to Offer Pick-Up Lines?

Mercedes-Benz is known predominantly for its exotic sports car and sedan offerings. The brand is also no stranger to SUVs, vans and superior off-roading beasts like the Mercedes-Benz G 63 AMG and the G500. So is it an April Fool’s Day jest, or will there be a Mercedes-Benz pick-up truck offering?

The renderings of a potential Mercedes-Benz pick-up truck have ignited rumors that the luxury automaker could be changing course and entering the pick-up truck market. According to Mercedes-Benz CEO Dieter Zetsche: “The Mercedes-Benz pickup will contribute nicely to our global growth targets. We will enter this segment with our distinctive brand identity and all of the vehicle attributes that are typical of the brand with regard to safety, comfort, powertrains and value.” The fairly cut-and-dry statement of intent was released along with the teaser rendering featured above.

Where the Mercedes-Benz truck would fit in:

The pick-up truck Benz would compete with the likes of the Ford Ranger, Volkswagen Amarok and some Toyotas. The Mercedes-Benz truck would have the added advantage of its quality reputation and luxury curb appeal to bring to the table. But will that be enough to attract pickup buyers who generally focus on performance abilities over appearances? It is more than likely that the mega brand has already factored that into the equation and is prepared to catapult from the gate with an enviable first specimen.

Overall, some say the truck project actually took root a few years ago and that it could possibly share some of the underpinnings of the Renault Nissan types thanks to parent company Daimler. Until the truth emerges, we are left to be taunted with photos and rumors!
