Porsche 918 Hybrid Concept Could Take its Top Off On the Street

Following a four-year hiatus, Porsche has returned to the 2011 Detroit Auto Show, brimming with optimism and enthusiasm.  I would be both optimistic and enthusiastic as well, if I were showing off the stunning 918 Porsche RSR hybrid racecar to the auto city!

Porsche as a brand delivers some of the world’s best luxury cars and exotic Porsche rentals, and when a new model emerges, the masses take notice.  The Porsche 918 racing coupe is in concept form boasting 767 horsepower with a B8 engine and two electric motors catapulting this luxury hybrid from 0-60 in just 3.2 seconds with top speeds of 198 miles per hour.  I would say that luxury hybrids and electric technology are certainly evolving!

In an intriguing twist, the exotic car rumor mill is bursting with chatter that the Porsche 918 racecar seen in Detroit is not to be the production version.   The production version of the 918 Porsche hybrid could be a spider version, unveiled at last year’s 2010 Geneva Motor Show, according to Wolfgang Durheimer, Porsche board member for development.  It seems that Porsche took a hard knock with the Carrera GT supercar, which had a similar roof concept to the 918 Porsche.

Overall, the 918 hybrid racecar will be produced with a roof, and the road version will remove its top for the masses, so everyone will be happy.
