The Mercedes 300SL was designed as a road car to pay homage to the 1952 Le Mans champion car, the W194. The 29 lightweight allow versions were made with racing in mind, though they were still a bit on the heavy side for track use in the 50s. The alloy version tipped the scale at a full 200 pounds less than their siblings. That fact has not inhibited collectors from craving them for their rarity rather than their racing records.
In addition to the lightweight aluminum-alloy body, Mercedes outfitted the alloy cars with Plexiglass windows, shorter competition springs, stiffer shock absorbers, hotter camshafts and knock-off Rudge-Whitworth wheels.
