Outshining all others on the red carpet at the 2013 Miami Art Basel was the glossy red LaFerrari hypercar. It was part of the of the annual societal soiree because Ferrari had sponsored an automotive art exhibit titled: “Piston Head: Artists Engage the Automobile”. The $4 million dollar LaFerrari emerged earlier this year at the Geneva Motor Show, and it has been captivating Ferrari lovers ever since. What better venue to display the masterpiece that is the LaFerrari than the swanky Miami Art Basel? Tragically, few likely realized they were taking in a sight most will never see. 

The LaFerrari managed to impress even the toughest artistic mindsets, which is rare for a completely stock automobile. The annual art show sprawls out to showcase only the most desirable artwork, attracting A-list celebrities, the super wealthy and collectors from every corner of the world. This year, over 75,000 guests admired the 2013 Miami Art Basel, which was overflowing with new items from around 250 of the world’s leading art galleries.

Onlookers admire the raw and red LaFerrari. I do believe she is blushing.

Above is the fantastic charcoal rubbing on canvas of LaFerrari by Joshua Callaghan. It was a part of the Piston Head exhibit and also an online auction, where it was anticipated to net $20,000. 

The Piston Head: Artists Engage the Automobile is an exhibit showcasing automobiles sculpted into works of art. There are 14 works in the exhibit, with a fabulous LaFerrari charcoal rubbing by Joshua Callaghan. An actual appearance by LaFerrari at the show was a major plus for artists and attendees. 

It seems that an artist is displeased with the Rolls Royce Spirit of Ecstasy emblem…which is typically a winged woman. 

What does this piece communicate to you?

Some are quite gaudy and difficult to take in. The LaFerrari does not suffer from that particular affliction.

Some pieces fall a little flat to draw attention.

Overall, the “Piston Head: Artists Engage the Automobile” exhibition is dotted with interesting pieces and ideas.
