It seems there will not be an Aston Martin SUV in the foreseeable future. While a plethora of luxury brands have opted to create and concept SUVs when they are known for sports cars or grand touring vehicles, Aston Martin is passing at this point to focus on coach building and perfecting its next-generation of exotic sports cars.
Because Aston Martin is backing out of the SUV race, rumors are flying. Is the brand avoiding a lucrative opportunity or are they increasing another one? With other high-end automakers spreading themselves thin creating fleets packed with sedans, coupes, SUVs and crossovers, and multiple powertrains available for each–Aston Martin could gain an edge in the focused markets.
The Aston Martin Lagonda SUV concept came out back in 2009, around the time when most major players started competing in new territory: the SUV market. According to Aston Martin design leader Marek Reichman, the Lagonda concept was from a very different time, and times have changed for the brand. That is not to say that the Aston Martin Lagonda is dead, it is now being tweaked to become a “Unique coach built experience”. Word is that there is even a prototype out there somewhere under wraps sporting the underpinnings of the Aston Martin Rapide.
Overall, until the company spills the details, we are all left guessing at what will become of the Lagonda concepts. Though it seems the next version will be something equally unexpected!
