Audi has achieved accolade nirvana with the fastest electric lap around the famed Nurburgring with its R8 e-tron! The brand certainly has much to celebrate in terms of recent success, with both a win at Le Mans via a diesel-electric hybrid racecar and the all-out speed of the e-tron.
The R8 e-tron hits the market at the end of the year
The Audi R8 e-tron destroyed the 12.92-mile lap in 8 minutes, 9.099 seconds. Toyota previously held the record at 7 minutes 47.79 seconds, but the P001 car that won was not a production model. So who is the champion gas-guzzler? That would be the Gumpert Apollo Sport at 7 minutes 11.57 seconds.
Audi e-tron specs:
• 2 electric motors
• 49-kilowatt-hour lithium ion battery pack
• 134 mile range
• 0-60 in 4.6 seconds
• Top speed around 124 miles per hour
• 4,000-pound body (those pesky saddle bags…err…battery packs!)
Audi raised the top speed to 155 mph for the Nurburgring lap
Markus Winkelhock, the driver for the record lap, stated: “The torque with which the electric motors propel the car uphill beats everything that I know — even if they make hardly any noise in the process, which at the start was really a completely new experience for me. In places where I really need traction, the torque vectoring — the displacement of the torque between the powered wheels — really helps me.”
Audi—lean, mean, and now green speed machines
