BMW is offering an incentive for their new ActiveE hybrid car to help customers kick the gasoline habit. BMW has paired up with Real Goods Solar to offer discounted residential solar panel systems to Active drivers, allowing them to charge up using the sun! It is happening…the SyFy future is unfolding.
BMW ActiveE
Real Goods Solar will install solar panels in the homes of BMW electric car owners for a full 35% discount (leasing and other options are also offered). It all sounds so perfect, which leaves me to wonder how successful the setup would actually be…and how many sunny days per year would be required in order to sustain such a dramatically greenhouse!
The downside: Installing a solar panel system will not eliminate energy bills! Real Goods Solar acts as a utility company, charging discounted rates for the solar-generated electricity in order to…well…remain open and offer upkeep and future installations.
The question: Won’t most BMW drivers be charging up at night? And wouldn’t that leave them plugging into the grid? Drivers could recharge large battery packs at home during the day while they are at the office, which may be the only way to ensure they are using renewable energy in the electric luxury cars.
BMW is integrated for the future…presently!
