BMW is certainly stealing headlines this year, taking over as the leading luxury carmaker in India, and now unveiling a shocker in the form of its most modestly priced luxury SUV ever, the BMW X1. What does this mean for luxury car rivals Mercedes-Benz and Audi in India?
Currently neither Mercedes nor Audi have a presence in the lower-priced luxury vehicle segment, which only serves to give BMW an added edge to their lead in the India market, if not consolidate it. BMW’s India expansion has been a smashing success.
I can’t help but wonder how this will affect the luxury car market, and exotic rental car industry. Will there be a new line of affordable luxury vehicles and possibly lower-cost luxury SUV rentals attached to a brand like BMW? Wicked.
Among the options of the BMW X1 offered, the top-end version of the BMW X1 will go for approximately $66,000, and there are three versions available:
• The sDrive 18i (petrol)
• The sDrive 20d (diesel)
• The SDrive 20d Exclusive
Thus far, the all-wheel drive xDrive model has not been released, and only the rear-wheel drive versions are available.
The BMW sDrive18i boasts a 2-liter petrol engine, and the sDrive 20d versions have 2-liter diesel engines. The BMW X1 is positioned to compete with entry-level SUVs like the Nissan X-trail, Toyota Fortuner, Mitsubishi Pajero and Outlander.
