Pelican Brief: Man Who Blamed Bird for Bugatti Crash Finally Admits Fault

Who could forget the Bugatti crash from 2009 where a man drove directly into a body of water and blamed a pelican. The video made a splash online, of course, and an even bigger wave through the court system. The verdict is in, and it is ridiculous.

Who can forget this clip? Listen as one occupant says: “I’m pretty sure that’s a Lambo, dude”…I think I clapped like a seal the first time I watched this video years ago.

Case recap: The owner of the Bugatti Veyron is Andy Lee House of Lufkin, Texas. He purchased the $1 million dollar supercar along with $2.2 million in insurance. To the man, the simple plan likely seemed genius. He proceeded to drive the Bugatti into a body of water and then file a claim for his loss. What he did not anticipate was the viral video that became his undoing!

Bugatti crashA low-flying pelican? Really? This scene belongs on the big screen in a cool car movie so that the amusement shall live in infamy…even if House faces two years in jail and costly fines.

Automotive expert (Sorry…couldn’t help myself!) and YouTuber Jomgarza spied the Bugatti Veyron out on the road that day and started making a video because it is such a rare sight. The video essentially put the brakes on House’s tall tale because in the video, there was no distracting pelican causing the epic fail crash.

After the pelican story failed, House claimed he had been reaching for his mobile phone. There were no skid marks at the scene, which the powerful Veyron would have surely left had House attempted to stop it from entering the water. Ultimately, House admitted to insurance and wire fraud and likely loathes the ever-present technology in society today.
