Luigi Colani began to make a name for himself in the arena of design around the 1940s and 1950s. Born in 1928, it became obvious at the onset of his career that German industrial designer Colani was indeed born before his time!
To give you a greater insight of Colani’s view, he says:
“The earth is round, all the heavenly bodies are round; they all move on round or elliptical orbits. This same image of circular globe-shaped mini worlds orbiting around each other follows us right down to the microcosmos. We are even aroused by round forms in species propagation related eroticism. Why should I join the straying mass who want to make everything angular? I am going to pursue Galileo Galilei’s philosophy: my world is also round.”
I am going to go ahead and assume Colani is referring to breasts, when he mentions ‘eroticism’. Who doesn’t like boobs? I think he is definitely onto something here!
As outlined above, Colani’s design theories are based on rounded organic forms, which he terms “biodynamic” and finds ergonomically superior to traditionally angular designs. He uses this theory in his kitchen appliance designs, on up to his rather futuristic auto designs!
While his appliances are mass marketed and produced, his future cars are just sweet bubbly dreams. Some of the cars appear round, and some nearly pancake flat. One thing cannot be denied-they are decidedly different and that makes them delicious. Colani has tried his talented hand at more than just car prototypes; he also has truck and personal computer designs. I recommend scoping out the Ferrari Testa d’Oro; it looks as if it were catapulted from the future!
Colani has received numerous design awards and is obviously among the great talents of our time. His son is currently following in his father’s large footsteps, and it will be interesting to see if any of dad’s cars reach production through his son’s endeavors!
