Luxury automaker Maserati is on track to meet its ambitious sales goals thanks to an unlikely addition: the Maserati Ghibli sedan. Fiat SpA (proud owner of Maserati and others) is also building the Maserati Levante SUV by 2015, which will assist in this endeavor. It is projected that the brand will enjoy an eightfold sales increase over a 3-year cycle thanks to the addition of the Ferrari-powered sedan and first-ever SUV.
Maserati Ghibli
It is no secret that people love options. By delving into new market niches such as the SUV and sedan segments, Maserati has and will attract new buyers. The Maserati Ghibli concept endured ridicule and praise, but has ultimately emerged triumphant as orders continue to roll in.
Levante SUV
As far as the Maserati Levante SUV model, the brand is maintaining a modest front, claiming that they expect to break even at lower sales volume initially. They could churn out as many as 25,000 SUV models in a year, if production is streamlined to allow that. Cadillac likely entertained the same fears, yet their Escalade has become one of the most popular luxury SUV options on the planet. If Maserati offers the right look, features and price, it could be a threat in that market.
According to sources, there are over 20,000 back logged orders in Maserati’s book of business. The company is delivering 3,000 units per month from its Grugliasco plant, where the Ghibli and Quattroporte models are built.
Overall, the next generation Maserati lineup is looking versatile and quite capable of coming out on top. What do you think of a Maserati SUV? Could it have the stuff to face-off with the likes of Porsche and Cadillac?
