The company who pioneered the luscious carbon fiber tubs in Formula 1 and brought the space age material to the road, McLaren, has introduced a new offspring. Yes, as we have mentioned before, the McLaren MP4-12C will follow predecessor McLaren F1 from the 90s. That is certainly a long gap between production models; then again, it is hard to trump perfection.
The new McLaren aims to please a larger market segment, with a mid engine, rear wheel drive 600 horsepower engine. This is designed to be a regular driver, as opposed to the original McLaren F1. Pricing is approximated at around $225,000 starting out, placing it in the same general bracket as Ferrari and Lamborghini. The design process of the McLaren MP4-12C is what has impressed us.
Slated for production in 2011, the newest McLaren was designed over a five-year period, nearly exclusively using McLaren’s state of the art technology and exclusive computer systems. These highly specialized computer systems are used exclusively for the company’s Formula 1 cars, so you know the outcome must sizzle.
The engineers at McLaren were able to both completely develop and even test each component of the MP4-12C McLaren before ever manufacturing a single part! We find that outstanding. So the next generation of the McLaren pays homage to its predecessor, while expanding to a broader driver spectrum. The designers have successfully balanced performance and functionality with a well-respected and drool-worthy brand.
