It is nearly time for the annual Art Deco Weekend, sponsored by the Miami Design Preservation League. Art Deco Weekend is one of South Florida’s most well-known and highly attended festivals, and this will mark its 32nd year.
The Miami Art Deco Weekend is a celebration of all things Art Deco, created in 1976 to attract visitors to Miami Beach’s Art Deco Historic District and to raise awareness and appreciation of the arts and culture of the Art Deco era that occurred from 1925-1945. There will be about 85 events this year, including:
• A parade
• Classic Car Fest
• Dance performances
• Music
• Film screenings
• Tours
• Street fair
• International cuisine
The theme and focus of this year’s event is celebration of the motorcar, which will be highlighted with the Classic Car Fest and certain pieces of art and available entertainment. Keynote speakers and lectures by leading scholars are available to inform, educate and entertain festival-goers. Films highlighting the 1930s will be shown to set the mood for the classic car theme.
The 1930s solidified America’s love affair with technology and transportation-most especially with the motorcar. The American spirit embodied on the open road, and mass production ensued. Thanks to this creation, we now have exotic cars to relish, including Lamborghinis, Ferraris, Aston Martins and more. If you will be attending the weekend’s events with a group, a Cadillac Escalade rental is ideal.
The 2010 Miami Art Deco Weekend is scheduled to be held January 15-17 on Ocean Drive between 5th and 15th streets, and with only two short days to pack in all of the available action, you may want to ensure that you are well rested at an area luxury hotel! We recommend the new W Hotel South Beach, the Mondrian, the Setai and more. Get ready for an event-filled weekend South Beach style!
