Tesla Motors Kills Roadster, Set to Revive it in 2013

Tesla RoadsterYour eyes do not deceive you-Tesla Motors has announced intentions to kill off the Roadster in 2011…and then bring it back in 2013.  Yes, the luxury carmaker will cease production on the coveted car; take a brief hiatus, with intentions to revive it in 2013.

In papers filed to the Securities and Exchange Commision for its IPO, Tesla Motors had the following to say:

“We do not plan to sell our current generation Tesla Roadster after 2011 due to planned tooling changes at a supplier for the Tesla Roadster.”

The background on this is that the current iteration of the Tesla Roadster is manufactured by Lotus, using Elise/Exige underpinnings in Hethel, England.

The quote above lends the possibility that Elise/Exige is to be replaced by a new model, leaving our beloved Tesla in a limbo.  But wait, it gets more interesting!

“As a result, we anticipate that we may generate limited, if any, revenue from selling electric vehicles after 2011 until the launch of the planned Model S…”

The Tesla “Model S” is scheduled to debut in 2012, leaving investors wary when the company begins to offer shares.  The Model S is an all-electric sedan, which translates to marketability-if it has the right engine power and aesthetics.  Remember, not everyone is on the green path, especially luxury car owners, fans and buyers.

Bottom line is, if you covet the current Tesla Roadster model, you better start signing your check now, or wait until 2013.  Not in the market for an exotic car of your own?  No worries, come and play with one of our exotic rental cars, they cure everything from boredom to fear of investing in one of your own!
