The Icona Vulcano Concept Offers Something Different

It is always interesting to examine the new exotic car concepts as they emerge annually, though some seem to be part of an endless parade of copycats and yawns. Not the case for the Icona Vulcano concept, which offers a refreshing take on how a supercar should look and behave!

In a few seconds, you will notice a beautiful model in the photo (alongside the car).

The Icona Vulcano made its first public appearance at the 2013 Shanghai Auto Show and will be showing off again at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance soon. The creators are Shanghai-based design studio Icona. They will be using the exotic car show circuit to gauge interest for production of the concept supercar. Coachbuilders in Italy meticulously constructed it with lines drafted by former Bertone designer Samuel Chuffart. But this concept supercar is far from just outstanding aesthetics; there is power behind this idea.

Equal attention was given to the development of the drivetrain for the Vulcano concept. Former Scuderia Ferrari engineer Claudio Lombardi developed the drivetrain. Under the hood of the Icona Vulcano lurks a robust V12 engine.

Two versions of the Icona Vulcano could emerge:

  • A 950-horsepower beast called H-Turismo with a V12 paired with an electric motor. Watch out, LaFerrari!
  • Or an 870-horsepower H-Competizione with a twin-turbocharged V6 engine paired with two electric motors

The brand is hoping to build an initial production run of just five units. It can be assumed that they will make that decision following this year’s Pebble Beach Show and the interest and attention they receive there. Overall, with such sharp exterior styling cues and a possible top speed of 217 miles per hour, they should have little trouble enticing a handful of buyers.
