Fans of Steve McQueen will soon have the opportunity to descend upon one of his cars at auction. A 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 once owned by the legend will hit the block at RM Auctions this August and is expected to net around $9 million. The auction is to be held in Monterey and there will be plenty of other stars and cars present.
The Ferrari 275 GTB/4 has been lovingly cared for and displayed at the Ferrari Museum in Maranello for the past year, but her very first owner was Steve McQueen. McQueen took delivery of the car in 1967 while filming the movie “The Thomas Crown Affair”. The car was gold at the time of delivery, and he had it painted that signature Ferrari red and added a few mods here and there to make her sexier. When he grew tired of her in 1971, McQueen sold the car to actor Guy Williams of Zorro. The rare Ferrari then went through a few owners before undergoing a complete restoration in 2010.
What is under the hood
This 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 is powered by a 3.3-liter V12 producing 300 Prancing Horses. It is in pristine condition, as is made clear with the outstanding photos. The number 4 indicates that the car packs the later version of the 275 with a 4-cam rather than the original 2. That sexy styling can be attributed to Pininfarina, one of the most talented design houses in history.
Why so much money?
This Ferrari model can net around $3 million if it is in perfect condition. Tack on the fact that it was the love child of a racing legend like Steve McQueen and that price quickly escalates. According to Max Girardo, director of RM Auctions: “When it comes to cars with celebrity provenance, it doesn’t get any better than a Ferrari owned by Steve McQueen.”
Interestingly, there will be a nearly identical 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 on the auction block that day, without a famous owner. The sale is to take place on August 15th and 16th, leaving us in suspense until then.
