BMW is known for superior engineering, and that includes pushing the pedal down toward the creation of luxury hybrid cars. The brand has just delivered its first ActiveE electric baby in the United States, setting the tone for a greener future. When it comes to hybrid technology, it seems that people either embrace it or reject it faster than Snookie can manage to intoxicate and embarrass herself in a bar. Either way, the technology is advancing and likely here to stay.
BMW ActiveE
The ActiveE is the successor to the Mini E and a precursor to the BMW i3, which is slated for a 2014 launch. According to BMW, the ActiveE has a single-charge range of 100 miles and nails the 0-60 marker in less than 9 seconds.
BMW plans for 700 U.S. households to lease the ActiveE for 2 years for testing purposes. The cars will be made available in Los Angeles, San Diego, Sacramento, New York, Boston and Hartford, CT at a rate of $499 a month with a $2,250 down payment.

To become a BMW Electronaut:
• Submit the BMW ActiveE online reservation form on the BMW USA website
• Complete a charging station consultation with AeroVironment, a BMW partner
• Complete a closed-end, two-year lease at a participating BMW ActiveE center and finalize a charging station installation. Deals are negotiated on a first-come, first-served basis, with deliveries beginning in 2012
