Porsche Set to Return to Le Mans 24 Hours With LMP1 Racecar in 2014

On the heels of a successful race at the Nurburgring 24 Hours race this year, Porsche has announced plans to enter the 2014 Le Mans 24 Hours race with an LMP1 car.  Is Porsche hitting the luxury racing circuit hard?

The LMP1 is a full factory prototype from the Stuttgart-based sports car manufacturer, and full details are under wraps.  This year Porsche stomped competitors in the grueling Nurburgring 24 Hours Race with the 911 GTR RSR driven by team Manthey (follow link for full details and photos).

President of the Executive Board at Porsche AG, Matthias Muller, stated that Porsche has always intended to return to Le Mans as a factory team and had been waiting for the right time to announce its intentions.

"Motorsport was always an essential part of the Porsche brand.  So for us it was only a matter of time before we returned as a factory to the top league of racing.”

Muller went on to say,
"Porsche’s successes in Le Mans are unrivalled. We want to follow up on this with the 17th outright victory."

Porsche went on to say that it could use the new luxury racing project to highlight new technologies as it did recently with the 911 GT3 R Hybrid, which raced in the recent Nurburgring 24 Hours with the flywheel KERS system developed by Williams.
