Sammy Davis Jr. was once quoted as saying,
“I had more clothes than I had closets, more cars than garage space, but no money." In fact, when Davis died in 1990, he owed an estimated $15 million in taxes. That may explain how his elegant 1963 Rolls Royce is hitting the auction block at Bonham’s August 18th! This is a can’t-miss luxury car auction for those who collect celebrity exotic cars.

The Rolls Royce is a Silver Cloud III Drophead coupe– one of just 23 created and features a sandy color. This is a unique luxury car, as it features left-hand drive, tinted glass and a special compartment installed in the rear armrest for the late Davis’s compact, notebook and smokes.
Purchased during the success of the “Rat Pack”, the Rolls has changed hands several times since Davis sold it. It sold at the Barrett Jackson Scottsdale auction in 1999 for $9,828, though Bonham’s estimates it could fetch around $500,000 today. That is roughly 5 times what it sold for 12 years ago!
Davis seemed to have tough luck in life, losing his left eye in a 1954 car accident on Route 66. He also owned several luxury cars customized by Batmobile creator George Barris and a DeLorean…perhaps before it was cool!
