The Ferrari brand will be taking on new roads now, and it will be moving forward without CEO Luca di Montezemolo. Montezemolo has been at the wheel of the Ferrari brand for an impressive 23 years. So which direction is the Prancing Horse headed and under what leadership?
The short clip above shows Ferrari CEO Luca di Montezemolo speaking of his retirement from the brand. It is just a little over a minute long, and appears to be at an event. Expect a full announcement from Ferrari when the act becomes official.
Montezemolo has served as the head of both Ferrari and it’s race team. He is now 67 years old and has confirmed his departure during a time when Ferrari is growing and changing. He seemed to be in good spirits about the changes and of the mentality that the future of Ferrari should be passed on to a new leader. This is all likely a part of the changes going on with parent company Fiat Chrysler Automobiles.
Will FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne become the next leader of Ferrari? He certainly seems to be the best guess to serve as successor. Montezemolo stated: “Ferrari will have an important role to play within the FCA Group in the upcoming flotation on Wall Street. This will open up a new and different phase which I feel should be spearheaded by the CEO of the group.”
Montezemolo joined Ferrari as Enzo Ferrari’s assistant back in the 1970s. He used to race Fiats and Lancias prior to taking on his coveted position at Ferrari. During his reign, he did remain dedicated to the Ferrari F1 program as well as many other areas of the company. He may be aging, but expect more great things from Montezemolo in the future. He has a specialty drink company, an interest in superyachts and I have a feeling he is not quite finished making things awesome!
