The New Harry Winston is Laurence Graff

The whole World is in financial depression, except for Laurence Graff. The British billionaire’s company, Graff Diamonds, just bought the Wittelsbach Diamond for $24.3 million. The grayish-blue 35.56 carat stone has an impressive historical provenance. It was given to Infanta Margarita Teresa by her father King Philip IV of Spain as part of her dowry to the Emperor Leopold I of Austria back in 1667. You know, just another day in the life of Laurence Graff who is worth an estimated $2.5 billion. Just to make you drool a little, Graff’s estate comprises of homes in Geneva, London, New York and Cap Ferrat in the south of France; a new 150-foot Feadship yacht; a Global Express XRS plane; a winery and vineyard in Stellenbosch, the Napa Valley of South Africa; and a modern and contemporary art collection worth $250 million.

He has been labeled the new Harry Winston, and Laurence Graff’s recent purchase of the Wittlesback Diamond set a record high at Christie’s London jewelry auction. Graff has swept the upper tier of jewelry retailing. The 69-year-old ascended from cleaning toilets in a Hatton Garden workshop to the helm of a worldwide brand with 15 stores in the globe’s wealthiest spots, from Monte Carlo to Dubai to Moscow. The fairy-tale story begins with vertical integration. In translation, Mr. Graff takes stones from the dirt all the way to the most spectacular Graff Diamond display cases.  His stones are a cut above the rest, many times preferred over even Cartier, Winston, Van Cleef & Arpels and Tiffany.  The thing is, Laurence Graff manages to do it as a private entity. The others sold out to conglomerates long ago but Graff feels as though he is just starting out. He won’t sell out, in 1973 he sold a third of his company but hated having shareholders and a board. He had bought all his shares back by 1978.

For now Laurence Graff is the only man still standing behind his brand, the Jacques Arpels, Harry Winstons and Gerard Boucherons have passed. Saudi Prince Turki bin Abdul Aziz, the Sultan and Queen of Brunei, Oprah Winfrey, Elizabeth Taylor, Donald Trump,  David Beckham and wife, Victoria, are all Graff lovers. If you want something done right, do it yourself. Laurence Graff does it right.

Light It All Up: LED Hooks

Whatever glows is hot. Instead of adding lackluster hooks and hangersaround your house, opt for illuminated LED ones by Pallucco. Lighten up any room with a stellar effect. We suggest lining the LED hooks in a linear way for an artful light display. They come in red, black and white which is our favorite; white is always fresh and elegant.  You can either connect the hook to a main voltage for a wall on/off switch or go the batter powered route with 3 high-efficiency white LEDs. The hooks radiate a halo-like white light onto the wall and your battery will last for up to 60 hours. Each LED hook is $350, plus, $130 if you need the battery charger. Just something practical and pretty to think about for the house.

If You Need A South Beach Time-Out

South Pointe Park is a hidden space at the most southern point of South Beach on First and Washington Avenue. We hate blowing up local spots to tourist but at this point we need to keep them coming back.  South Pointe Park is about a block away from Joe’s Stone Crab restaurant which does have the best stone crabs in the country. They have a pretty awesome take away side if you are looking to make a beach, park picnic. Hot spot Nikki Beach is also right around the corner and they have a hot Sunday afternoon party that is worth checking out. Steakhouse and rawbar restaurant Smith & Wollensky is kind of situated right in the park. The happy hour on the back deck is a shmoozy circus, where you probably won’t even find a seat. The sunset is fantastic and It’s an excuse to get wasted before dark. The multi-million dollar residencies at the Contiuum overlook the park, so you are always in good company. Epic cruise ships pass through the channel, so close to shore it’s surreal. Surfers, models, dogs and joggers frequent the park but South Pointe Park still somehow remains tranquil. There is a little bunch of fountains that you can chill by and take the edge off. The Park is just a cute-sy little spoy that allows you to be in South Beach without having to feel the South Beach hysteria. Check it out if you need a few minutes time-out.

Barack Obama Brought Hope to Miami

Art is an expression of life, especially political life these days. This year Art Basel Miami captured one of our most historic moments in political history through the visage of President-elect Barack Obama.  Barack Obama appeared in different ways and different works of art, last week all over Miami beach. Even as the financial crisis curbed many art transactions, there was still an overwhelming feeling of hope.  Collective hope in the potential of our new President-elect Barack Obama and finally a newfound pride in America. It seems a picture really does say a thousand words.

Pricey Bull Comes in Second to Some

The Italian automaker Lamborghini seems to be aiming for Bugatti with its $1.4 million Reventon supercar. Extreme cars are a Lamborghini legacy and the legacy continues. The 2008 Lamborghini Reventon is named after the bull that killed the great matador Felix Guzman in 1948. The ferocious two-seater pulls design cues from fighter planes, like its arrow-shaped nose, and is closely based off of Lamborghini’s current Murcielago LP640.

Besides a very similar but more radical profile to the Murcielago LP640, the Reventón’s chassis is also made from composite carbon fiber.  will have the same 12-cylinder engine, tuned to deliver at least 650 horsepower at 8,000 rpms. Like the Murcielago LP640, this translates into 60 miles per hour in 3.3 seconds and top speeds well over 200 miles per hour. Flat panels underneath the car and a rear diffuser help minimize turbulence and stabalize the Reventón at high speeds. A glass cover shows off the rear-mounted engine and the rear taillight LED’s have been heat-proofed so as not to melt from the engine at high speeds.

Inside, a futuristic, all aluminum instrument panel holds three LCD screens. One of which is a g-force meter that uses a 3D grid to illustrate the forces of physics on the car as it accelerates, brakes and goes around curves. Old people needn’t worry, if computers still scare you then that’s pathetic but, at least, Lamborghini has taken you into consideration. At the touch of a special button, the digital graphs morph into a faux-analog display with classic circular instruments.

The Reventón is about the same price as a Bugatti Veyron, yet based on other numbers is down 350 horsepower and is notably slower in terms of both top speed and 0-60 mph acceleration. Plus, it seems that to many eyes, the Reventón has also placed second in terms of looks. However, at this point none of "bull-crap" really matters because only 20 Lamborghini Reventón’s will be produced and, of course, all have already been spoken for. We are pretty sure that if you are one of the Reventon 20, you’re first and foremost a Lamborghini freak. Plus, at this point everyone around you is probably afraid to utter the word Bugatti. […]

Just Laughable: Artist Takashi Murakami

Prolific contemporary Japanese artist Takashi Murakami had a good time at Art Basel Miami. We like to see an artist take his work seriously but at the same time be lighthearted too. Murakami did just that when he dressed himself up in a queer flowery suit of characters, green tights and flower covered kicks. Murakami is well know for blurring the lines between fine art and digital and commercial media. He takes pop culture motifs and turns them into thirty-foot sculptures, "Superflat" paintings, or marketable commercial goods such as figurines or phone caddies. In Miami he caught our attention by taking a walk outside the box and getting us to laugh along with him. Thanks for some silly-ness man.
