Porsche 911 Carrera S Nabs 2013 ‘Car of the Year’

Robb Report has selected the Porsche 911 Carrera S for its ‘2013 Car of the Year’ award!  The sleek 2-door model won the judges over, running over the Ferrari FF hot hatch, Audi S8, BMW M5, Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG and even the Bugatti Veyron Vitesse. The winner for 2012 was the Lamborghini Aventador supercar. The Carrera S is a fantastic car, but better than a Bugatti? Better than the new Ferrari Berlinetta? This begs further investigation.

2013 Car of the Year

According to Robb Report, the 2013 Porsche Carrera S offers “Agility, driving dynamics and balance”. So what criteria did the panel of judges adhere to in selecting Porsche this year? Let’s begin by reviewing the Carrera S specs below.

2013 Car of the Year

About the 2013 Carrera S:

  • 3.8-liter gas flat 6
  • 400 horsepower
  • Hits the 0-60 mark in 4.3 seconds. There is, however, a magic button. Tapping the optional “Sports Plus” button that comes with the Sport Chrono Pack will take that time down to 4.1 seconds.

The panel included 100 ‘automotive experts’ enlisted to drive each competing model. I use the term experts loosely, because the definition does seem to vary broadly across the industry. The 100 judges for this competition were members of the Robb Report Club, which is largely comprised of corporate execs and readers.

Each brand and model was evaluated based on a list of criteria, and the Porsche Carrera S somehow emerged at the front of the line. Factors considered include quality of driving experience, ergonomics, styling, safety features and, of course, performance. Congratulations to the brand on the win! The full details will emerge in the March issue of Robb Report magazine.
