With all of the rumors of a potential Rolls-Royce SUV swirling around the depths of the Internets, there is now something more solid to cling to: Rolls-Royce is testing an SUV chassis on the winged Phantom and inviting the public to check things out as the development process proceeds!

The brand has been busy releasing photos of the test mule, which is a short Phantom with a distinctive rear wing. While it may or may not end up looking like this, it is certainly a good indication of things to come. Rolls-Royce has made the first move, beating spy photographers out of their play by sharing the photos and information right up front—well played. They describe the vehicle as follows: “an engineering mule.” It serves as the testing chassis for a four-wheel drive version named ‘Project Cullinan’. Would a Rolls-Royce SUV feel ostentatious or awesome? We have to wait a really long time to find out. 

It could be that Rolls-Royce is simply laying low and observing what other luxury SUV builders are doing these days before they enter that arena. The risk of financial loss and dents to the reputation is always there for a leading luxury automaker. Rolls Royce CEO Torsten Mueller has paved the SUV rumor path with the following statement at the Frankfurt Motor Show: “We are intensely thinking about entering the SUV segment.” That is a very clear way for the brand to challenge the likes of Bentley and other luxury SUV models. Which badge will craft the most popular upscale crossover?

The concept of a Rolls Royce SUV does not seem as strange when you consider that the brand is known for its high-riding and spacious vehicles. Does that description not bring to mind an SUV? Simply add a bit more height and cabin space, and boom. You see where I am going with this. It is not as startling as the idea of a Maserati SUV or the Porsche SUVs out there.
