Aspen is the Fashion Mecca of the Skiing World

What could possibly be missing from Aspen, Colorado in the Spring? Apparently the fashion mecca of the ski world didn’t have an official fashion week. Prada, Ralph Lauren and Louis Vuitton have all maintained full stores in Aspen and now they have a spring fashion week to look forward to. For anyone who doesn’t know, Aspen is the posh ski spot that’s more about who you’re wearing and who you are than skiing. If that’s not your scene then don’t go to Aspen; for unpretentious skiing, go to Telluride, Colorado.

Aspen’s first-ever five day fashion week will launch March 1, 2009. There will be nightly fashion events, instore presentations, and après-ski soirees to glamorize the "Mountain Lifestyle." By winter 2009/2010 the hope is for 15 high-fashion designers to show collections on full-scale runway productions, think Bryan Park glamour but in the Rockies.

Aspen Fashion Week 2009 will be a winter sports-ware forum filled with the ultimate A-list. Considering that the winter sports market is up and coming and took in nearly $3 billion last year it seems relevant. "Winter sports and resorts attract 6 million of the most affluent, influential, and athletic consumers in America, and while more and more leading designers are catering to this A-list group, up until now there have been no flagship fashion events to reflect this trend," said Lisa Johnson, the mastermind behind Aspen Fashion Week and former vice president of the Aspen Chamber Resort Association (ACRA). "With Aspen’s status as the king of ski resorts and winter culture, Aspen Fashion Week is ideally suited to be an important stop on the annual fashion week circuit." The confirmed sponsors worth mentioning are W magazine, Veuve Clicquot, Plum TV, The Sky Hotel, St. Regis Aspen Resort, The Little Nell, Limelight Lodge, and Aspen Peak magazine.

Skeptics that think an Aspen Fashion Week won’t make it in this economy, well, think what you want. Lisa Johnson has publicly mentioned the realities of our economy, the plan is to start small and grow with the power of the Aspen brand. "Aspen likes its events," Johnson says. "And Aspen Fashion Week is one that will never leave and go somewhere else. We have a perfect fusion of fashion, function, mountain lifestyle and winter wear. There’s no place this really works but here." Come on, it even rhymes, Aspen and fashion can’t be wrong.

The Diamond Shirt for Him, Now at Harrods London

Here we go. Harrods the London-based luxury retailer we die for has been having a charity auction since December 8th. ‘Tis the season of giving and Harrods will be donating all auction proceeds to the Great Ormond Street Hospital, how sweet.

Among the glitz and glam for auction is the world’s most expensive man-shirt. For the man who already has everything, get him the white shirt by Eton. The collared shirt is fabricated in premier Egyptian cotton, plus, you know, some diamonds. Yup, multi-colored diamond buttons and cuff-links ya’ll. Your man will be pleased with this addition to his wardrobe. He will command and dazzle any holiday party this year in the Eton shirt. The diamond-encrusted shirt is valued at $28,258.00 but it’s an auction so for the sake of charity, we hope it pulls in more. In this day in age, diamonds aren’t just a girls best friend.

Functional Art Caught Our Eye

Art in all its forms has been the theme of the week. Whether film, sculpture, light installation, music or fashion, art is art and finding that piece that makes you say "oh wow," is pretty cool. We have come across a relatively new fashion designer that is worth mentioning because, well, we thought "oh wow." Barbara í Gongini turns her inspirations into art and functional fashion pieces.  The Danish designer has gone avant-garde with black wedding dresses and knits that seem so simple yet brilliant. Like a bug attracted to the light, it is hard to look away from the collection.

Barbara is fascinated with graphic forms and primitive silhouettes, but she is forward thinking. The nouveau designer uses eco-friendly jersey and has a strong belief in helping the environment through sustainable products. Barbara is not in the business of mass production but rather a high level of quality and innovation. She divides her collection into two extreme pointsof view. I-rEguLar is the inventive side, where Barbara plays around with sundry themes of art and design. REguLar is the more basic side of I-rEguLar, both ahering to Barbara’s personal expression on form.

Her take on fashion, and life is elitist, bold, daring and eloquent. Barbara í Gongini should make no apologies but rather continue to design because this is what high society is all about. Stylists, keep Barbara i Gongini’s line in mind for the next Costume Institute Gala at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. If you are unclear as to what the Gala at the MET is then we don’t know who you are, but you’re probably nobody. The Costume Institute Gala is only the most elite fashion gathering, in New York City, of A-list celebrities and designers on the globe. Celebrities wear avant-garde and futuristic fashions ever pushing the artistic envelope and we respect it all. Barbara i Gongini is looking to expand her collection into high end bags, jewelry and shoes, you go girl!

Ella Ella Ella, Billionaire’s Umbrella

Formula one mogul Flavio Briatore has linked up with designer Angelo Galasso to launch a luxurious clothing line for men. The pair aren’t playing around. The exclusive brand is called Billionaire Couture and apparently it’s exclusively for billionaires. One line item worth mentioning would be their black, water resistant crocodile umbrella. Why mention an umbrella? Because it’s the world’s most expensive umbrella at $50,000. The umbrella is available by special order from the Billionaire Couture flagship boutique on Sloane Street, London. We figure London is as fitting a place as any to buy a $50,000 umbrella, at least it will get good use. Check out the rest of the Billionaire Couture line, that is, if you can afford it.

The Holiday Gift for the Man Who Already Has Everything: Vicuna Wool Robe

Here we go, don’t know what to get your billionaire boyfriend this holiday season? We do, it’s the Derek Rose dressing gown known to the joe-shmoes of the world as a robe. Now this is no ordinary robe, it is a luxurious splurge for those of you that can still afford to splurge. Selfridges department store is unapologetically catering to the ultra-affluent people of the world with items like the Derek Rose dressing gown. For a cool $22,290, the robe is the priciest bed gear known to man. Why you ask, does a robe cost $22k? It’s called Vicuna wool, one of the most exquisite and rarest types of wool in the world. A Vicuna is cousin to the Llama but produces much less but extremely fine wool. A Vicuna is an endangered species that now lives only in captivity in the Peruvian highlands and the animal can only be shorn every two years. Just think your man could wear it all Christmas day, heck he might wear it everyday to get his money’s worth. Then again, if you’re buying the Derek Rose dressing gown in the first place, money is obviously no object. He will probably wear it once or twice and then lose it in the closet but it’s still a good idea for the man who already has everything!

How To Grow Up and Do a Tuxedo Justice

Yes, we said buy because unless you’re 17 years old and rolling to prom, renting is no longer an option. This is a quicky guide for fashionably challenged men that don’t speak Calvin Klein, Prada or Tom Ford. Also for the ladies who don’t know jack about dressing their men. People a tuxedo is not a bad thing, do not be afraid of the tuxedo. The tuxedo has been fashionable since 1886, you can’t say that about your Nike dunks no matter how cool you think they are. Thus, it should never be a chore to wear one, they are gentlemanly and classic and every woman is attracted to a good tux. With the right tuxedo you can take on the world or at least a room, but you need to understand a few things about yourself first. Are you a bow tie or regular tie guy? Do you even know what a peak-lapel versus a shawl-collar means? We say the tux must always be tailored to fit like a glove. The shirt must be white, the shoulders sharp and the black tie, very black but lets start at the beginning.

Bow ties are back in. If don’t feel daring or just don’t dare to be an attention grabber then opt for the basic black tux and white shirt. Keep the shirt fitted slim because when you chuck the jacket you do not want to look like a pirate. Dior Homme makes a good slim-fitted shirt for $495. If you don’t know your lapels then go with a notch lapel, it makes less of a statement than a shawl or peak lapel. Notch lapels resemble a more classical suit jacket and tend to flatter more men than not.

If you are going for something a little different, we said a little different, than convention. A midnight blue tux hits an alternative, but still classic, note without getting all tacky. Generally, wear the midnight blue suit, not light blue monstrosity, with a white shirt and black tie. Unless you still want to be different, which in that case, you can do a black formalwear shirt, open at the collar. There are good versions of this tux by Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger, Neil Barrett, and D&G. If midnight blue just isn’t your color then go for a black velvet jacket, not the full suit guys but just the jacket and keep the rest of the suit simple. Velvet doesn’t work in summer, it looks silly.  Equally not to be done in summer is the white dinner jacket. If you are going for Old Hollywood, think Clark Gables or Cary Grant, then master the white dinner jacket. Best to be worn from March through October, always with black pants and especially around mint juleps. If you want a more modern look then opt for an understated take on a two-button tuxedo.  The two-button tuxedo will be good for almost any formal occasion. Calvin Klein makes a great looking moder tuxedo for $1,195, Tom Ford makes a swankier version for $6,840.

Your tuxedo should be the focal point, not you cuff links so keep them understated. If you need a little more color in your life then go for a pale pink or dusty blue shirt. We are not talking brights or pastels here, but a few shades off white. The colored shirt is a good wardrobe for avid tuxedo wearers, it will help mixup the black and white monotony.

As for footwear, the shoes should always be black, period. We say keep the shoes simple too, no wingtips or monkstraps. Just basic good old-fashioned black leather lace-ups or slip-ons. If your black tie affair is ultra fancy then go for black patent leather kicks. Top it all off with a simple watch that has a black band. We like Chopard’s for $10,690 but as long as the watch isn’t flashing the time, you should be alright.

Take our tuxedo advice and you will be debonair and put together at your next black tie affair. Don’t scoff at the tuxedo, embrace it because it’s not going out of style in the near future. Good luck guys and may a Barney’s sales associate always be with you.

What Happened When Victoria’s Secret Came to Miami Beach: Part 1.5

Ok, ya’ll are probably more interested in looking at the sexy Victoria’s Secret models then reading about them. For now here are some pictures to obsess over from the runway show. If you still have no clue, the show was held last Saturday November 15th at the renovated Fontainebleau Hotel in Miami Beach, Florida.

The festive lingerie show had  a full orchestra, a glitter-flooded runway, 35 supermodels and two performances by Usher. Victoria’s Secret senior Heidi Klum walked the runway just a few times, her mega-glam gift-bow wings were the ave dersane (goodbye). Basically you could put those girls in anything and they would still look good, case and point. The Rynway show turned out to be more of a costume show of girls prancing around in bra’s and wings but we don’t mind. We still have even more to fill you in on from Saturday night before, during and after the show, which is way before the December 3rd airing by CBS so stick around.

Sexy Victoria Babes and the Beach: Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show on Miami Beach

The oh-so-popular Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is almost here and by here, we mean next week in Miami Beach (our hometown!). The 2008 sexed-up show will broadcast from the revamped Fontainebleau Hotel in Miami Beach. The Fontainebleau Hotel is one of the most legendary and architecturally stunning hotels on the Beach. Built in 1954, and originally designed by Morris Lapidus, the Fontainebleau was hailed as one of the most luxurious of its time.

The Fontainebleau Miami Beach sits oceanfront at 4441 Collins Avenue, the hotel was purchased in 2006 by the restored Fontainebleau Resorts Firm.  Fontainebleau Resorts then set out to give the hotel a $1 billion dollar facelift over the next two years, taking vigilant care to preserve the circa 1950’s design elements like the famous "staircase to nowhere." The renovated Fontainebleau will debut with a 40,000 square foot spa, two brand new towers (Chateau and Versailles), 15,000 rooms, 11 restaurants and lounges, three nightclubs and an oceanfront "poolscape" with several pools. Plus, iMac computers in the ritzier rooms. If that wasn’t specific enough for you and you’re into name dropping, then here you go… Just to name a few,  the Fountainebleau will feature: Gotham Steakhouse, Sprezza Italian restaurant, Hakkasan a Cantonese restaurant, LIV Nightclub, Blade Sushi bar and Glow the Pool Bar. Fun factoid, President elect  Barack Obama also stayed at the Fontainbleau Miami Beach on a recent campaign tour of South Florida.

The remodeled and refashioned hotel brings us back to models and fashion. The Fontainebleau Hotel’s behemoth grand opening will be kicked off by the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show on November 14. A virgin to Miami Beach, the famed lingerie runway show will be taped and broadcast by CBS for the sixth year in a row. The show will air on Wednesday, December 3 at 10:00 – 11:00 P.M ET/PT on CBS for all those not in attendance for the actual show, which was by invite exclusively.

We look forward to seeing Victoria’s Secret supermodels Heidi Klum, Adriana Lima, Marisa Miller, Miranda Kerr (also on this months issue of OceanDrive Magazine) and an army of other seductive Angels. Plus, Miami Beach will be flocking with celebs and games of whose who. Television audiences will get to see musical performances, red carpet interviews, model profiles and a behind-the-scenes look at the making of one of the world’s most eminent fashion shows a.k.a a totally commercialized circus. Past musical performances have been the Spice Girls, Justin Timberlake, Seal, Sting, and Mary J. Blige. This year Usher is rumored to be the main musical guest performance. Here’s to hoping the $1 bill Fontainebleau Hotel Miami Beach looks as hot as the supermodels. We are keeping our fingers crossed and we will be there to keep you posted, you know you’re totally jealous!

Posh Spice Follows Suit: Beckham #2 Drops Pant for Armani

David Beckham’s "huge" underwear advertisement for Emporio Armani men brought in mass amounts of publicity. Crowds swooned over the Time Square billboard in Manhattan. All the positive attention prompted Armani to ask Beck’s wife Posh to get in on the campaign.

Posh spice a.k.a Victoria Beckham will pose in just Emporio Armani women’s underwear for the Spring/Summer 2009 campaign. The shoot will be done by photographers Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott. "Victoria is a style icon, a dynamic lady whose influence and recognition will add great excitement to the continued international growth of our Emporio Armani women’s underwear business," said Armani in a recent press release.

The couple is celeb-royalty, their British estate has been dubbed Beckingham Palace.  Emporio Armani has finally done a good thing and we are excited for the new campaign. Mr. and Ms. Beckham should help sell a lot of underwear for Armani and if not, at least they look good trying. Even better than good, they are so great looking it’s not even human. You know you are dying to see the leggy waif drop her knickers this time.
