In Chiba, Japan, the premier electronics show featured an energy efficient city of the future. The futuristic city had a special show floor devoted entirely to it at the Combined Exhibition of Advanced Technologies (Ceatec), amid the electronics, gadgets and robots.
The city of the future is a crack at selling a vision of urban life in 2020 and beyond, a “Smart City” so to speak. The vision is of a post-fossil fuel world, utilizing alternative energies derived from the sun, wind and nuclear power, harnessed in mass quantities. The idea is much the same as the latest hybrid automobile tre
nds, using alternative forms of energy to decrease our dependence on non-renewable resources and be more environmentally friendly in the process. So what is the vision for the future of Japan’s cities?
The power harnessed from various natural sources is distributed to buildings, homes and even electric cars that are connected through “smart grids”, which have the capacity to monitor usage throughout the energy network. Carbon emissions are decreased drastically, which are thought to be one of the causes of global warming.
A test city will be set up in Yokohama, just southwest of Tokyo, where the social and infrastructure of a smart city can be tried for the rest of the world to emulate. This will be a five-year experiment, and is titled “Yokohama Smart City Project”. Seven Japanese companies are participating in the smart city experiment, including Nissan Motor Co., Panasonic Corp., Toshiba Corp., Tokyo Electric Power Co., Tokyo Gas Co., Meidensha Corp., and Accenture’s Japan unit. The end result hoped for is a social model to sell to the rest of the world.
But Japan is not the only country creating smart grids; Australia has invested around $100 million into developing a commercial-scale smart grid in Newcastle. South Korea is also going green, embarking on a smart city project on Jeju Island and aims to slice national energy consumption 3 percent by 2030. China is also jumping on the green wagon, investing a cool $7.3 billion toward the technologies.
Toyota will launch its own home smart grid system called the Toyota Smart Center in Japan while simultaneously releasing its plug-in hybrid cars in 2012.

It is being referred to as the “Mumbai monstrosity”, and for just cause! The richest man in India, and fourth richest man in the world, evidently wants everyone to be aware of that fact, because he has constructed the world’s first billion-dollar house. That is right, it is a personal residence, not a hotel, and it is worth an estimated billion…with a ‘B’.
I do not think this is quite what India’s Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had in mind in 2007 when he called on India’s business leaders to “eschew conspicuous consumption”. Taking that advice to heart, 53-year-old Mukesh Ambani proceeded to construct a 27-story personal residence worth $1.08 billion big ones. He named his palace ‘Antilia’ for the legendary island in the Atlantic rumored to have driven Spanish and Portuguese conquistadors to search for cities of gold in the Americas.
I am wondering if perhaps Ambani is compensating for something he lacks, erecting such a phallic pad. Speaking of pad, it boasts three helicopter landing pads. Yeah, I always hate it when I have to wait to land. It does make sense, however, when you consider Mumbai’s legendary traffic. So what other luxury amenities are at his fingertips?
According to reports, it features a private health club complete with a gym and dance studio, a ballroom, a theater seating 50, 27 floors of lavishly appointed rooms, underground parking for 160 vehicles, which I assume will be exotic and luxury rental cars of important and pampered guests like Ferrari rentals or Lamborghini rentals. I bet Ambani has a Bugatti or two in the mix also. Sigh.

This Luxury List Item is definitely not for the squeamish! Kopi Luwak is an exotic coffee hailing from Indonesia that is processed in a quite peculiar manner. These coffee beans are harvested after passing through the Asian Palm Civet, a cat like mammal indigenous to the area. Yes, the civet must first excrete these coffee beans before they make their way to your cup! I would think people would have to be paid rather than pay to drink these
dirty beans, but pay they do, to the tune of $100-$600 USD per pound!
The civet eats the coffee berries, which possess a cherry-like pulp on the exterior of the coffee bean. The coffee berries then spend a day and a half in the digestive tract of the civet, where proteolytic enzymes seep into the beans, which some feel reduce the bitterness of the coffee. The beans maintain their shape upon defecation, and are then gathered, washed thoroughly, sun dried, lightly roasted and brewed to yield an aromatic and sweet brew. Yum.

Bugatti Veyron, one of the fastest supercars on the planet, is perched to take the Indian markets by storm. As soon as October 28th, 2010, Bugatti will begin to sell their luxury cars in India, inspired by the recent success of luxury cars in that market. So far, before sales have even begun, there are two buyers lined up.
Luxury car brands Bugatti, Bentley and Lamborghini are all owned by Volkswagen, and will all be distributed by Exclusive Motors to the Indian market.
Bugatti is often the favorite, a truly spectacular sports car. The latest Bugatti Veyron 16.4 is capable of reaching speeds of approximately 168 miles per hour, nailing the 0-60 mark in around 3.2 seconds. The Veyron is rumored to be the current fastest car under regular production. I wonder how many exotic and luxury car rentals Bugatti plans to make available to the Indian market.
