Picasso Painting Sells for $106 Million-Painted in One Day

One anonymous phone bidder’s passion for Picasso set them back a staggering $106 million, in about 9 minutes flat.  The auction took place at Christie’s in New York, and the Picasso piece was the sought-after oil painting, “Nu au Plateau de Sculpteur” (Nude Green Leaves and Bust).

This hefty sum ($106,482,500 to be precise), takes the new record for highest price paid for a piece of art.  The previous record was set back in February, at Sotheby’s in London, when Giacometti’s “Walking ManPicasso Nude Green Leaves and Bust Oil Painting I” went for an astounding $104.3 million.  Rumors are circulating that the very same reclusive billionaire art collector purchased both pieces.

Expensive does not even begin to describe this hobby!  Hey, for the price of those two paintings, this art collector could have purchased a brand-spanking new fire red Ferrari F430 Spider, and likely gotten more enjoyment out of it.  They could have invested in a number of luxury and exotic cars for that sum, like a Lamborghini Gallardo, or Aston Martin Vantage…well, everyone has their passion I suppose.

The prestigious Picasso painting measures an unobtrusive 5 feet by 4 feet, depicting one of his many mistresses, Marie-Therese Walter in a reclined position and nude.  Picasso himself is said to be in the background.  The piece was painted in 1932, in just one day, and is considered to represent a turning point for the famed artist.

It is unknown if any other artist has brought in that much money on a piece that consumed only one day of their time.  I would consider that a good day’s work.  I am curious if the piece will now go back into hiding, or if the new owner (whoever it is) will be sharing it with others.  It really is a remarkable piece, and I feel it should be shared, yet for the price the new owner paid for it, they are free to do whatever they please with it.

The Most Expensive Bugatti-$40 Million?

1936 Bugatti 57SC AtlanticIs it me, or do luxury cars and antique luxury cars keep getting more expensive?  Exotic and luxury cars represent a market that consistently surprises, like with the recent sale of a 1936 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic, for a staggering $30-$40 million.

While the auction house and broker, Gooding & Company is mum on the matter, reports place the transaction for the antique Bugatti between $30-$40 million.   I am searching the Rolodex in my brain for a car that has sold for more.  If reports are accurate, this buries the previous record of the 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa last year.

The Most Expensive Sweet Tooth-$150,000 Cupcakes?

Cupcakes and diamonds and gold, oh my!  The things that can be done with food never cease to shock meDecadence d'Or Cupcake $750.  If you are so inclined, and have an impressive enough bank account, you can sink your sweet tooth into cupcakes that range from $750-$150,000.  Yes friends, cupcakes.

First up is the Decadence d’Or, by pastry chef Long Nguyen.  This is truly a decadent pastry, available at Las Vegas’s Palazzo Resort for the price of $750.  Why the hefty price you ask?  This is no ordinary baked sweet, it is made with edible gold flakes, Palmira Single Estate chocolate, gold-vanilla caviar, and a Louis XIII de Remy Martin Cognac bottled around 1900.  I searched for a photo of someone clamping down on one with gold teeth, but no such luck.  It is so exquisitely presented, I imagine it would be difficult to bring yourself to eat it!

Ferris Bueller’s Ferrari Officially Sold

1961 Ferrari 250 GT Ok so we all know that the Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder that starred in the film “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” was a bit thrashed up during the process of filming.

Yet, a replica of the 1961 250 GT just fetched an impressive $122,000 at Bonham’s in London on Monday, managing to exceed the auction house’s pre-sale estimate of $45,000-$60,000.  Just another testament to the power of a classic luxury car.

Ask Imagine: Luxury Cars in the Windy City?

Dear Imagine Lifestyles,

I have recently begun following your luxury blog, as I frequently perform online searches for rental cars and found your website to be informative and also entertaining.  I live in Chicago, which you have recently begun to service with your fleet of luxury car rentals.

There are times when I attempt to contact luxury rental companies in the area, and they lack the tact to even answer their phone.  I think this is extremely unprofessional, so I never followed up with a second attempt to do business with them.  Imagine Lifestyles Luxury Rentals

Other so-called “luxury” companies do not have in stock what I consider to be luxury cars.  For example, while they may have a BMW or two, they lack the bad boys like Ferrari, Bentley and Rolls-Royce.

I would like to see how your level of service relates to my needs, and what exotic cars you have available in Chicago.  I will not suffer another company promising me the stars and then falling far short.

Sincerely,
Albert, Chicago

Blind Pop Singer Takes a Ferrari F430 up to 182 Miles Per Hour

Turkish pop singer Metin Senturk annihilated the previous Guinness World Records title of fastest blind driver, by taking a Ferrari F430 up to 182 miles per hour.  The previous world record had been 176 miles per hour, held by a British bank manager.

Let us take this moment to truly be impressed, as we own some Ferrari F430s, and know that the F430 Spider tops out at 197 miles per hour.  So this obviously adventurous blind man had this exotic car within 15 miles per hour of its potential!  Outstanding.

Ask Imagine: Bro-Off

Dear Imagine Lifestyles,

I live in Miami, and have recently stumbled across your luxury blog.  I was searching online for an exotic rental car, as I have never rented one before.

My brother is coming down to Miami to visit, and I really want to see the look on his face when I pick him up from the airport in a Lamborghini, Ferrari, or other luxury car.   I haven’t seen him since the holidays, and we often do things to surprise each other, and make each other jealous-it’s a bros thing.

From what I have been reading, you guys are the people to see, so what do you recommend for a first time luxury car renter and why?

Thanks for your help,

Aden, South Beach

Exotic Destinations: Meet Ferrari World Abu Dhabi

Move over Mickey Mouse, the world’s fastest theme park is set to make history in 2010, in the form of “Ferrari World”.  We even like the way the words feel rolling off of our tongues…Ferrari World.

The only unfortunate thing about Ferrari World so far is that it is so far…away.   Ferrari World is located in Abu Dhabi, which is no problem save the fact that it is on the opposite side of the planet.
