F22 Jet Fighter Inspires Lamborghini

While it will likely remain a concept, the Lamborghini Indomable is certainly some food for thought, eye candy to be exact.  What is so special about this concept Lamborghini?  For starters, it is based on a mash between the Gallardo and an F22 jet fighter.  Yes please.

Lamborghini took time out of its packed schedule touting the new Jota is the potential replacement for the Murcielago to help inspired students with this concept. The Lamborghini Indomable was designed and developed by students Daniel Chinchilla Ochoa and Alberto Fernandez Albilares at the Scuola Politecnica di Design Master in collaboration with Lamborghini.  The project was overseen by head of the Centro Stile Filipo Perini and designer Alessandro Salvagnin.

The Lamborghini concept’s exterior is unbelievable, with even more lines and curves than the already voluptuous design cues that are classically Lambo.  Oh and it is inspired by the next generation stealth F22 jet fighters, making it the Chuck Norris of Lamborghinis.  While this is awesome, it is not the first time a luxury car has taken design cues from a jet, remember the Range Rover’s interior, inspired by a cockpit?  Thank you Design Q!

The Indomable Lambo in its concept phase is a V10 supercar, with an engine visible through a Y-shaped class surface reminiscent of the F22 Raptor.  The bonnet boasts elements borrowed from the jet, with rectangular intakes to cool the brakes.  The rear of the Lambo features a taillight that doubles as a wing, integrating LED lights with a honeycomb shape.

According to the students,

“The side view shows an abstraction of a folded wing, which gives the feeling that the car is waiting for the action, like a jetfighter before the take off in a carrier."

I, for one, want to see this supercar concept bolt right off the paper and into garages and showrooms around the world.  Perhaps if it could also fly…

Audi Rising to Challenge BMW, Daimler

Volkswagen AG’s more upscale Audi brand is aiming high, with plans to target people who want a sportier family car.  The new A7 Sportback is geared toward providing the luxury sport family car experience.  That also means that Audi essentially plans to infiltrate the sales of BMW and Daimler AG in luxury cars.

According to Volkswagen AG’s Chief Financial Officer Axel Strotbek,

“We’re pushing into customer groups that are willing to pay more for their car, and that’s where the A7 will play an important role.  It is clearly going to help us with our profitability.”

Like the Phoenix rising from the ashes, the 2011 Audi A7 is set to hit the Western Europe mark2011 Audi A7 luxury caret as soon as October, for the bargain price of approximately $66,000.  It is a bold move by the luxury company that will hopefully result in increased sales and stability.  The plan is to increase the compact and mid-size auto sales from 250,000 to 400,000 by 2015, largely with the help of the new A7 niche.

Luxury List: The Porsche Carrera GT

Preceded by the Porsche 911 GT1 and succeeded by the Porsche GT1, you will find the Porsche Carrera GT.  This supercar hit a production run in 2004 that ended in 2006.  Yes, for a delivery charge of just $5,000, a Porsche Carrera GT would have been delivered right to your door. Now you can see why Imagine Lifestyles added this to the biggest luxury list on the web.

That really isn’t too steep for a luxury car that sold for an MSRP of around $440,000 USD.  Tack on a dealer invoice of around $14,800, and the Porsche Carrera GT boasted a price tag of around $421,000.  Nice.  So what went wrong?

The original production run called for around 1,500 of the Carrera GT models to emerge onto the market, but Porsche announced in 2005 that production of the supercar would come to a screeching halt, citing a change in U.S. airbag regulations.  Lame.  So as of May 6, 2006, 1,270 Carrera GT’s had been manufactured, with a mere 604 sold to the United States.  I am assuming the cost to convert the design plan and budget of the Carrera GT to conform to the new airbag regulations was deemed excessive.

Getting down to specs, the Porsche Carrera GT is powered by a 5.7-liter V10 engine kicking out 605 horsepower.  This is in stark contrast to the original concept Carrera GT, which featured a 5.5-liter version Porsche Carrera GT Supercarwith 558 horses.  The Carrera GT hits the 0-60 mark in around 3.5 seconds with a top speed of 205 miles per hour.   A six speed manual transmission was the only option, which makes it a driving enthusiast’s choice.

As far as aesthetics, this luxury Porsche came in five basic colors:

•    Guards red
•    Fayence yellow
•    Basalt black
•    GT silver
•    Seal grey

Owners could custom order colors from the factory.  The Carrera GT features oversized side inlets and air dams to cool the larger sized V10 engine, framed by a carbon fiber rear bonnet.  So how do you stop a supercar that powerful?  With carbon fiber reinforced Silicon Carbide ceramic composite brakes, of course.  The brakes are ridiculously effective and equally attractive.  To show off, a rear wing spoiler deploys at speeds of around 70 miles per hour.  Wouldn’t this be a perfect car to add to our fleet of Miami luxury rental cars or our every growing amount of Chicago exotic rental cars?

The interior of the Porsche Carrera GT is predictably plush, with soft leather, Bose audio system, navigation system and other luxe options.  I will close with a fun fact:  the ignition is located to the left of the steering column, paying homage to the early days of Le Mans racing when drivers where required to make a running start, hop into their cars, start them and race.  That way, the driver could start the Porsche with one hand, and put it into gear with the other.  Awesome.

The Masteretta MXT-A Supercar for $40,000?

The Masteretta MXT is a making headlines as the first high performance sports car to be entirely produced by Mexican carmaker Masteretta.  The MXT has been completely designed and produced in Mexico and is touted as the very first Mexican made supercar. It is so close to ‘Maserati’ but they are two different luxury carmakers.  Oh, and a Maserati is about 3 times more expensive!

Production will begin in 2011 for the MXT Masteretta.  Pricing is on the lower end at around $38,000 USD, so put your order in now!  I find the MXT to be physically attractive, but what is inside counts, too, so leMasteretta MXT Supercar Mexicot’s get down to specs.

The Masteretta MXT is a mid-size sports car bursting with design flair and packing a 2.0-liter turbocharged Duratec engine with 240 bhp.  This supercar hits the 0-60 mark in under 5 seconds with a top speed of 150 miles per hour.   I suppose it helps being a lightweight two-seater weighing just 900 kg!

The MXT supercar is constructed from bonded aluminum with a semi-monocoque chassis and features aircraft style technology.  Customers who place orders now will be able to register their cars in May of next year, and production is limited to 80 cars the first year. Not sure if this car will qualify as a Miami luxury rental car but I would still agree that this a great sports car for any car enthusiast.

Ferrari 458 Italia-Some Like it Hot: Ferrari Recall

Ferrari fans, owners and employees have been aflame with the latest news from the supercar brand, that some of the 458 Italia models are being recalled in light of the recent fires reported on several models around the globe.  That translates to replacements or recall tweaks to a percentage of the 1200 $260,000 dollar luxury cars.

Of the 1200 458 Ferrari supercars, only some will be making backtracks to the factory.  All Ferrari 458 models built since July have been modified at the Ferrari factory to resolve the problem.   The 458 model was not introduced to the United States market until June, so only a small percentage need be recalled.  The models that did catch fire will be completely replaced.

Steam Powered Cars, That’s Hot

Steam powered engines were quite popular for a brief time around 1900, but lost its grip to the internal combustion engine.  External combustion engines are nothing new, and if Cyclone Power Technologies Cyclone Power Technologies Mark V Steam Enginehave their way, the steam-powered car will once again be as popular as gasoline-powered vehicles.

The gas powered cars eventually won the contest, as they were more convenient, with low maintenance and boasted better performance than the steam powered variety.  Prior to the electric starter, however, steam power was the champ.

Luxury List: The $1 million Mercedes-Benz G-Class

This luxury SUV appears to have been based on a simple cardboard box…just replace the cardboard with carbon fiber.  Oh, and slap on a price tag of $1 million smackeroos.  Meet the Mercedes G-Couture.

This SUV is not only an eyesore; it makes no logical sense, yet there it is.  Yet, it does please me greatly that companies are willing to add luxurious carbon fiber to SUVs, it will not only look great, but lighten the gas-guzzling load and lower environmental impact.

In my humble opinion, the G-Class SUV still bears too much of a resemblance to its original tank-ish beginnings.  Now it is a tank with a luxury badge, and demands a heavy wallet.  Now let’s get down to specs!

Engine:  5.7-liter supercharged (I love that word)
Power/Torque:  700 bhp
Top Speed:  158 miles per hour
0-60 Mark:  4.3 seconds
Fuel Economy:  Don’t ask
Competition:  Lunar Shuttle, Brabus G-Wagon, TechArt Magnum, Chuck Norris

Auto Energy Efficiency Meets Ingenuity AKA One Badass Sports Car

Students at DeLaSalle School in Missouri were fortunate to have the elite assistance of Bridgestone America when they created the most energy efficient electric car to date (according to claims).

So how efficient is the auto?  Reports claim this car can obtain 300 miles per gallon, a figure that has me run over.  If this is true it is certainly a milestone for Bridgestone and the students, who have already applied for a slot in the prestigious Guinness Book of World Records.

The car has been designed, engineered and tested both at Bridgestone’s technical center in Ohio and racetrack in Texas.  It is built on the chassis of a 2000 Lola Indy F1-style racing car.  That is about where the similarity ends!   It has been extensively customized with extremely lightweight materials, frame and a unique see-through plastic body.
